Patrician Youth Centre…in situ since 1981

The Centre opened it’s doors in October 1981, a purpose built centre for children and young people. The Centre has seen thousands of children and young people pass through it’s doors over the years, taking part in programmes and socializing in the organisation.

Over the decades the Centre has delivered the curriculum set by DENI (Department of Education Northern Ireland) Youth Service and like all aspects of education has seen many changes over time. The policy worked to at present is the ‘Priorities for Youth’ and ‘Model for Effective Practice’ set in place by DENI providing a framework for all programmes and activities for children and young people.

Patrician is the Parish Youth Centre and one of 14 centres established by the Catholic Church across the Diocese of Down and Connor. The building itself was built on what was originally the site of the ‘Canon’s Hall’ – a dance hall in the town which attracted many to dances weekly in the 50’s and 60’s and where the showbands entertained and many’s a romance began!

The Youth Centre has carried on the tradition of dance with years of ‘Disco’ entertainment, attracting teenagers from near and far and many a romance has blossomed as well! The centre is a registered Charity with the Northern Ireland Charity Commission.

Management and Staff

The Youth Centre is managed by a Management Committee appointed by the Centre Trustees. The Centre is staffed by two professionally qualified full time youth workers namely a Senior Youth Worker and Centre based Youth Worker and a panel of Part Time Youth Workers, Specialists and Volunteers.
